Living the Magical Life: Let It Go

Lately, whenever I start to get upset about something I start to ask myself this question. What am I afraid will happen if I just let this go? Surprisingly, the mind actually stops its chatter to briefly ponder this question. Mine generally can't come up with an answer that makes any sense.

My father miniaturizes his frustrations. He plops them in an imaginary box, closes the lid and thinks of them no more. In this way the anger stops with us and is not perpetuated. This is the only way to find true peace in the world.

Living the Magical Life: Shifting Perspective

Starting from where I am today I am gently reminded just how little it takes to make the decision to uplift, spread peace and otherwise dispel negative energy. I stumbled upon this free, printable poster offered by Kind Over Matter. I hope you will like as much as I do.

Kind Over Matter - Free Compliments PDF

As many of you know I've been actively engaged in a job search for nearly 3 months now. Sadly, I received my latest rejection letter yesterday so I'm feeling a bit discouraged. I also drew the Devil card to the question, "What am I passionate about; what lights me on fire?" To my deep dismay, the tarot throws into sharp relief the fact that I am being burned alive by my job discontent, so much so that it overshadows the positive. There is definitely something significant that I need to pay attention to here.

I can't get this quote out of my head
I'm having to ask myself some tough questions to try to shift my perspective. There is a life lesson in where I am. I can choose to face it or I can run away and face the same problem again later. The cows aren't necessarily nicer on the other side of the fence. It only seems that way because I haven't gotten to know them well enough yet. It's the same pasture, same grass just a different barn with a net effective change of zero. UGH!

Complain less, breathe more

Maybe the fact that I haven't found a new job yet is the universe's way of telling me to stay where I am and learn the lesson. It just feels so damned uncomfortable though, not to mention painful which only means it will take more focus to overcome it but it can be done. How do I respond to a festering jerk with respect and kindness and resist the urge to crawl over a desk to throttle them around the neck? I think what awaits me on the other side is that my efforts have the power to potentially and forever free me of drawing this type of situation into my experience. That alone sounds like a pretty nice payoff.

Living the Magical Life: Pushing Through Anger

Let's play a game. Raise your hand if you grew up believing that anger was an inappropriate emotional response to any situation? Were you taught that it was not okay to express anger? If you said yes, you're not alone but I'm here to tell you that anger is a normal part of the human experience. To deny it, to stuff it down or ignore it is definitely inappropriate and can actually lead to more emotional problems than you had before. Not only that, but denying your anger can even manifest itself as physical problems. Yikes!

Last week I mentioned a mind numbing blow that definitely stirred up a hornet's nest of rage and anger from within me. How do you feel about having to smile graciously and treat someone you feel has wronged you with nothing but the utmost respect and decorum when what you really want to do is quite the opposite and then some? I've felt intense anger much of the time for the past couple of weeks and in the moments when I stop feeling angry I go back to feeling powerless. So how do you keep your cool during the times when you really want to explode?

Stop thinking! That sounds easier said than done, doesn't it?! Thinking is the fuel that feeds anger or any single emotion for that matter. Thinking keeps the emotion alive well beyond its shelf life which in reality is actually only a few minutes. Usually our thinking runs rampant to help us escape the discomfort of our negative emotions. If we can stop thinking for a few minutes and embrace that hot, uncomfortable, painful energy, we can realize that the pain does pass and that we really can survive it without reacting to it.

I'm not saying this is easy by any stretch of the imagination but having a conscious awareness of what's going on inside your head and choosing to do something different in the moment will make all the difference in the outcome of the situations you find yourself in. Remember Atticus Finch? He is a shining example of someone who responded to hate with dignity and chose not to perpetuate it. This is the only way to knowing true peace in the world.

The second part of this anger equation is how to begin moving our emotion in a more positive direction and discontinue the ping pong match that goes on between the feelings of powerlessness and anger so that we don't slip into depression. Believe it or not, rage is a positive step up from feeling powerless and feelings of revenge feel better than rage. Anger feels better than revenge so to tell someone who feels powerless that anger is inappropriate is doing nothing but keeping them trapped in their feelings of powerlessness. Telling someone that anger is inappropriate does more harm than good in this situation so now you get the idea.

Okay, here's where thinking can help improve the situation. We've already determined that we can't change the situation but we can choose thoughts that help us feel better about where we are and regain some of our power back. This doesn't have to be monumental in any way but by choosing to do this one thing, even if it's only for a few minutes at a time, it actually has the power to tip the universal balance in our favor. What happens then is nothing short of magic because the outer world begins to change with the new thinking. I've seen the power of this in my own life so I already know it works.

I can hear the collective "How do I do that?" question. Have conversations with yourself. It doesn't have to be out loud in fact, keep it to yourself. This can be done in the shower, during your commute or any time you have some down time. I find it useful to do this even when I feel angry because it helps diffuse the situation and keeps my head clear.

Conversations I have with myself begin with a lot of 4 letter words at first and that's perfectly okay. In time, my conversations will begin more positively and that's all that matters. Once I get past the 4 letter word stage I can begin to say things like the following:

This is only temporary.
There are plenty of people who have been in similar situations who were the same age I am.
They made the same changes I want to make and were very successful.
It's okay for me to make changes.
Only I get to choose what's best for me.
I see a more positive situation coming to me where I feel more freedom.
I enjoy the people I work with because they are easygoing and I feel easygoing too.
I can laugh at the situation a little bit and not take things so seriously.
Life doesn't have to be serious, it's supposed to be fun.

With conversations like this, that negative energy I once felt begins to lift. I feel more light hearted and hopeful because there is a knowing that comes over me. This feels like your mom or a good friend giving you a big hug and telling you everything is going to work out fine and you know what? It will. I will generally start getting little signs that things are looking up. The universe is funny that way. Try this and watch the magic that will begin to transform your negative experiences and you'll realize how much they had to teach you. You may even find yourself developing gratitude for them.

Living the Magical Life: Replacing Negative Thinking

Panic! Desperation! Complete powerlessness! These have got to be a few of the worst feeling emotions in the world. What do you do when life suddenly hands you a change that you were not only unprepared to deal with but know with every fiber of your being is about to crush your soul right out of  existence? You haul ass out of there leaving a trail of fiery skid marks blazing fiercely behind you.

Here's the thing. I no longer have to acquiesce to situations I feel unhappy in or that leave me feeling trapped and demoralized. I don't have to identify with or become emotionally attached to what others think. What they think or believe does not make me who I am. Change happens for a reason. The trick is to find the lesson.

original source unknown
After being dealt an emotionally mind numbing blow at work last week it took me a couple of days to pick myself up, dust myself off and realize the universe was sending me a message. Actually it's been trying to get the message across for quite some time but I wasn't listening and now it has seen fit to give me a forceful shove. This is the point at which the self talk becomes so important because this is where the outcome of your choices is actually determined.

via Southern Main Hypnosis
Usually old and often negative programming comes into play which is exactly why most of us end up in the same situations over and over again. Stop! Become aware of what's going on inside your head. I made the decision not to play the old programming, not to feel sorry for myself or wallow in negativity (well, hopefully not for long anyway). The statement "there are things I can do" began playing over and over inside my head which helped restore my personal power so that I didn't feel quite so helpless.

via Joe Casey - Emotionally Resilient
Empowering statements help keep the head clear long enough for divine guidance to show the way. I am not a victim! I am educated enough, I am talented enough, I am experienced enough to find something else. There are plenty of good opportunities waiting for me and I know the right one is coming to me now. Can you feel the difference in the energy of these statements versus something like "I can't because . . . "?

via zero tolerance to negative thinking
I can allow others to be who they are. They don't have to change or be different in order for me to be happy. Nobody has the power to make me happy but me. I do have the choice though of whether or not I want to associate with them and make them part of my experience. My situation has now become too painful for me to remain in it but the bills still have to get paid so off I go in a new direction and that's perfectly fine at any age. Don't let your self talk hold you back! Pay attention to it because there is great wisdom there waiting for you. It holds the key to your future.

Living the Magical Life: Silencing the Inner Critic

The inner critic feeds on a nasty little parasite called the mind meme which really is a culmination of the beliefs and fears of your parents, teachers, authority figures, media and peers and the beliefs of your parent's parents, teachers, authority figures, media and peers and so on and so on up through the lineage of mankind.
meme  [meem]
nouna cultural item that is transmitted by repetition in a manner analogous to the biological transmission of genes.
When fed a steady diet of mind memes it becomes difficult to develop a belief that anything outside of them could possibly be true. So how do you break free? Stop believing everything you think. This is where affirmations can help but it requires us to approach our lives from a more conscious perspective.

via Kristin Dundish
The inner critic is incapable of surviving in the light of complete presence so here is step one before we get to affirmations which will help train you to pay attention. Begin to notice when your critic is saying something negative about you.

via e3alchemy.com
What does the inner critic tell you? How does it make you feel? What happened to make you feel that way? Keep in mind that what you feed your mind is also having an effect on your body. You may wish to keep a notebook and write down the thoughts and feelings that come to mind. This will help you later when building your affirmations.

Living the Magical Life: My Something Different

I was hired as a contract transcriptionist back in late September of last year and 5 months later I still have yet to take my first job. This kind of work means no heinous commute, no restrictive dress code, and no having to get permission when I want to take time off. Total freedom within my grasp so what on earth was I waiting for?

"freedom" via Belinda Benn
I bought an expensive new computer, spent months researching which software would work best and be compatible with my operating system. I dreamed, envisioned, broke down every road block standing in my way including financial blocks and I still had yet to set aside some practice time. Tomorrow, next week, next month, I told myself,  I will . . . It's not good enough! It has to be rephrased as RIGHT NOW . . .  and go and do it.

"procrastination" via kilork.com
My "something different" for overcoming inertia is practicing with my equipment which started last week. So far it has been a lot of fun and I've enjoyed it so much that I've actually begun creating a little bit of momentum for doing it. Not surprisingly I feel better about myself having taken the step. My initial fear about beginning seems to have vanished the moment I started and you know what? Nothing bad happened. Isn't that interesting?!

Rohrig Tarot - Fool
Believe it or not, doing what you set out to accomplish actually improves self esteem because you have removed a reason to beat on yourself emotionally. The inner critic has been silenced, or so we hope. I wanted you to know that I'm right there in the trenches with you, trudging through the sludge, working through the barriers to a happier, healthier, more balanced life. What steps are you prepared to take today to rise above the monotony? . . . and go and do it!

Living the Magical Life: A Ritual Shower

Anything you do as a ritual will make a resonance upon the unseen world. Just because we can't see it doesn't mean it isn't there waiting for us to make the most beneficial use of it that we can. Even a warm shower or bath can have therapeutic results when approached as a healing ritual.

via Ripped N Fit
The other day I woke up with a low grade headache which I experienced difficulty in getting rid of. The standard medicine cabinet remedies were not working. I remembered reading something quite recently about water being a great conductor to the unseen world ritualistically speaking so I decided to turn my shower into a ritualistic experience.

via She Knows - Canada
I felt the warm water run down upon me and smelled the fresh scent of body wash sweeping over my skin. As I washed I imagined white light entering through the top of my head. I envisioned it running down through my feet and back into the earth, asking it to cleanse me of all negative attachments and influences as it did.

By the time I got out of the shower, my headache pain had subsided and was gone a short time later. I found this exercise to be a great release for letting go of the petty stuff of the week that I might otherwise of held on to. If you decide to try this, let me know what your experience was.

Mystical Magical Potion No. 1

You know that saying: As above so below? I think I finally understand what that means and knowing it makes me feel like I've always had this secret magical power within me just waiting to be tapped into. So today I'm going to give you a mental recipe for your first magic potion.

The subconscious mind is the key to untapped powers within. It understands and speaks the language of images and in fact is the bridge between you and the divine infinite responsible for turning thought into material manifestations. Feeding images of how you want your life to be to the subconscious mind is like watering a plant. Eventually, with enough love and regular attention, the plant will flower into something beautiful. You've actually been doing this all your life but you've probably gotten pot luck results because you didn't know how to create your life in a deliberate way.

So how does this work? It really is like magic because as you feed images to the subconscious mind through visualization, the subconscious mind goes to work with the infinite to make them happen. You don't have to know how they will happen just trust that the results will unfold in the best way for you and all involved. In essence, you are reprogramming your life the way you envision it instead of what your parents always told you or your teachers or the media.

I'll give you one example of some small things that have started happening to me by using this method over the past couple of weeks. I needed to make an emergency appointment with my dentist. I didn't focus on a particular day but I did have a time in mind. I wanted a 3:00 p.m. appointment so every time I thought about making this appointment over the weekend, I visualized that I would be offered a 3:00 p.m. spot. Amazingly the only available appointment this week was a 3:00 p.m. on Thursday (tomorrow). While this is much later in the week than I had hoped, I did get the time I wanted because that is what I visualized. Pure magic! Next time I'll be sure to include a day.

Ingredients:

  • Willingness
  • Strong Belief
  • Positive frame of mind
  • A particular intention
  • Affirmations
  • A quiet place

Preparation:

I recommend choosing a time when you are in a positive, relaxed and receptive state of mind. In the morning just after waking is a good time because you are still relaxed. Evenings are good too but I find I fall asleep in the evenings so I like mornings and mid afternoon.

Sit or lay someplace quiet where you won't be disturbed for 15 minutes or so. Breathe deeply a few times. Imagine a white screen in front of you. Visualize your intention. I keep going back to a yurt in some quite setting. You can say affirmations at the same time or just use images. Spend a little time each day visualizing, affirming and feeling the feelings of what it would be like to actually be living that dream. In a very short period of time you should start seeing some interesting things begin to happen as the heavens rearrange themselves to accommodate you.

Note about money: I would recommend that money itself not be the focus of your intention. What you want is not actually money itself but what you believe money can give you. This might include security, freedom, a new home, travel or whatever it happens to be for you. There is a different, more positive energy associated with focusing on an outcome rather than how it will come about or be paid for.
